Iranian man slain in World Cup 2022 celebration of team's defeat, according to report
Security personnel reportedly shot and killed a man in northern Iran as demonstrators against the government openly celebrated the national football team's exit from the World Cup.
Activists claim that Mehran Samak was shot in the head on Tuesday night in Bandar Anzali after honking his car's siren.
People dancing and cheering in the streets were seen on video in other places.
Considering their national football team to be a symbol of the Islamic Republic, many Iranians declined to support them in Qatar.
Following their 1-0 loss to the USA in the last group match, state-affiliated media accused hostile elements both inside and outside Iran of applying unjust pressure on the players.
Before their opening match, which England won 6-2, the players did not sing the national anthem, ostensibly in support of the demonstrators.
However, they did sing during the tense match against the USA and the 2-0 victory against Wales.
Even though there were rumours that the team came under strong pressure from Iranian authorities, some demonstrators perceived that as a betrayal of their cause.
